Ways to Protect Yourself from Skin Damage by UV Light

Having a lot of exposure to the summer sunlight will increase the risk of developing skin cancer. Although the sun is the primary source of the cancer-causing ultraviolet radiation, it does not necessarily mean that you have to avoid the sun entirely. It is even unwise to remain indoors when the sun is out as this will significantly limit the much-needed physical activity by your body. At the same time, getting too much UV radiation on your skin can also be detrimental. In this article, we have compiled a list of ways through which you can protect your skin from the dangerous rays of the sun.

Use sunscreen on a regular basis

According to the American Cancer Society, exposure to the radiation from the sun otherwise known as ultra-violet radiation (UV), is a major causing factor for most cancers of the skin. Experts recommend a sunscreen that is broad spectrum (UVA/UVB protection) and SPF30. You will need to apply sunscreen 30 minutes before exposing your skin to the sun, and you will also need to reapply it every two to three hours. You should also use water-resistant sunscreen whenever you have swimming on your agenda. After getting out of the water, remember to reapply the sunscreen.

Wear protective clothing

There are also clothing items apart from sunscreen that will protect you from the dangerous ultraviolet light. You can protect your forehead, neck, and shoulders from sunlight by wearing sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat and long sleeved pants and shirt if possible. UPF clothing will offer added protection from ultraviolet light from the sun.

Avoid sunbathing

Doctors can’t stress this point enough. There has never been such a thing as a healthy tan. While sunbathing is not a favorite among many, it would particularly be an awful idea for people with a fair skin tone. Fair skin toned people are at the risk of sustaining severe sunburns when they sunbathe. However, if you feel that you cannot give up sunbathing, it is advisable that you do it moderately which will help your body to build melanin that will protect you from absorbing UV light. The use of tanning oils is also dangerous as it enhances the effects of UV light which leads to worse burns.

Avoid the sun between 10 Am and 2 Pm

The factors that determine the UV light strength include reflective surfaces, time of day and altitude. In some states like Utah, the high elevation to the sun renders summer months very dangerous. Places where the sun’s elevation is higher also record a higher number of cases of people with skin cancer. Avoid going out when the rays of the sun are most active, and this is between 10 Am and 2 Pm.
